What is LASIK

LASIK, an acronym that stands for Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis, reshapes the inner layer of the cornea using a laser. It is the most effective type of Laser Vision Correction and is frequently performed by Palm Beach County eye specialist, Dr. Katzen.

Palm Beach County LASIK patients frequently ask how long the procedure and recovery time takes. Normally a LASIK procedure can take about 10-15 minutes per eye. But the laser can correct a patient's vision in a matter of seconds.

LASIK provides rapid healing and recovery time. Patients usually experience excellent vision without glasses a few hours after the procedure.

LASIK eye surgery technology at Katzen Eye Care in Palm Beach County During the pre-operative portion of the procedure, scans of each eye are performed using the Pentacam and the Wavefront CustomVue and iDesign Advanced Wavescan Studio (AWS). The data obtained from these measurements assure maximum safety of the procedure as well as achieving a visual outcome that in many cases results in vision that is better than contacts or glasses!

In the initial surgical step for LASIK, Dr. Katzen uses the Intralase iFS Laser to create a blade-free protective flap of corneal tissue which is gently folded back.

The Visx Star S4 "Active Trak" Excimer laser, which has been programmed from the pre-op measurements, is then activated to remove a predetermined amount of tissue from the inner cornea to correct a specific amount of refractive error. Each pulse of the laser can remove 39 millionths of an inch of tissue in 12 billionths of a second.

Once the inner layer of the corneal surface has been treated, Dr. Katzen returns the flap to its original position and the eye is allowed to heal normally without stitches.

The technologies of the Pentacam, Wavescan, IDESIGN, iFS Intralase laser, and the VISX Star S4 "Active Trak" Excimer laser, coupled with the advanced surgical skill of Dr. Lawrence Katzen, enable patients to receive an unparalleled degree of safety, accuracy, and predictability with their LASIK procedure.
