Glaucoma Treatment

Senior man with serious face

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with glaucoma, you are likely seeking more information on this eye condition, including the most effective treatment. Glaucoma is an eye disease that results from damage to the optic nerve from high pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) due to fluid buildup.

There are two main types of glaucoma: open-angle and angle-closure, both leading to vision loss and ultimately permanent blindness if left untreated. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of the eye condition and is caused by the eye’s drainage channels becoming gradually clogged. This type of glaucoma typically has no symptoms, so it is important to have your eyes examined regularly by an eye doctor so that they can detect and treat this vision-impairing disease in its early stages.

Angle-closure glaucoma is an eye emergency that develops suddenly and occurs when the drainage canals in the eye are blocked, causing a quick rise in intraocular pressure. This type of glaucoma has symptoms that may include severe eye pain, blurred vision, and nausea and should be treated immediately to prevent significant vision loss.

Though there is currently no cure for glaucoma, the vision loss associated with the condition can be slowed, and a significant portion of your vision can be preserved through treatments, including medications and eye surgery.
