Things Women Need to Know About Their Eyes

Group of women all ages

Due to the changes that affect a woman’s body during their lifetime, they tend to be more susceptible to vision problems.  According to the National Eye Institute, two-thirds of blindness and other vision issues worldwide occur in women.  More women are likely to be diagnosed with Glaucoma, Cataract and Age-Related Macular Degeneration.  Two important factors are that women tend to live longer than men and they go through hormonal changes that affect their vision.

  • Birth control pills are known to cause blood clots and strokes which can cause vision problems, as well as, causing dry eyes.
  • Pregnancy causes many changes in a women’s body including her eyes. Dry eyes, light sensitivity, prescription changes and eye puffiness are common eye problems.
  • Menopause often causes dry eyes and uveitis which is an inflammation of the eye.
  • Fertility drugs may cause spots in their vision
  • Breast Cancer drug treatments cause many changes in the body including the eyes
  • Autoimmune disease
