LASIK Questions

Are all patients who wear contacts and glasses candidates for LASIK eye surgery?

Patients with practically every amount of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are enjoying great results from the LASIK procedure. A complete examination is needed to determine how much laser vision correction can be achieved.

Facts About LASIKHow long has Dr. Katzen been performing these eye laser surgery procedures?

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Katzen has successfully performed over 30,000 microsurgical procedures. Since 1997, has has performed over 7,000 LASIK preocedures.

He is among the first surgeons in South Florida to offer patients the benefits of the LASIK procedure utilizing both the IntraLase FS Laser and the 3D “Active Trak” Visx Star S4 Excimer Laser with CustomVue Wavefront-Guided Ablation in a permanent setting. Because of his expertise and international reputation, he is today considered among the leading eye surgeons of the world.

How long will the procedure actually take?

You will be at the Katzen Eye Care & Laser Center about two hours. The time in the surgery suite with Dr. Katzen is approximately 20 minutes. The actual laser treatment time is usually one minute per eye.

Is the laser painful?

There is no pain throughout the procedure because medication is administered to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. You’ll be awake throughout the procedure. In fact, we’ll be talking to you and your responsiveness is important. After the procedure, most of our West Palm Beach / Jupiter / Boca Raton laser eye surgery patients experience little or no discomfort.

What if my eye moves during treatment?

Designed to provide more accurate results, the ActiveTrak eye tracker is a new 3D eye-tracking technology. With ActiveTrak, the laser detects and compensates for small eye movements by guiding the laser beam to keep it centered precisely over the treatment area. ActiveTrak continuously repositions the laser beam throughout the procedure for greater accuracy. ActiveTrak realigns itself between each laser pulse insuring pinpoint accuracy. The eye tracker adds a new level of precision, comfort, and safety not previously available.

What can I expect my vision will be the day after surgery?

Most patients notice improved vision immediately after the procedure and can function without their corrective lenses at the one day post operative exam. Patients will continue to see a gradual increase in their vision during the first five to seven days after the procedure.

Dr. Katzen is among the top refractive surgeons in the country and is especially recognized as a leader in laser vision correction procedures in the South Florida area.
Are the results permanent?

Yes, however, LASIK will not prevent age related conditions such as cataracts or presbyopia (the condition of needing reading glasses when you reach your forties). If you are currently in that age range, however, it is possible to create "monovision" during surgery. This allows one eye to be stronger at near and the other stronger for distance vision.

Can both eyes be done at the same time?

This decision is made together by Dr. Katzen and each patient. In general, both eyes are done at the same time. This is more convenient for the patients, and allows them to experience the pre and postoperative period only once. Occasionally, patients request separate dates for surgery and we are always pleased to accommodate their requests.

Does insurance cover refractive surgery?

Most companies consider refractive surgery elective and it is not usually a covered benefit. However it certainly is worth checking with your insurance company and we suggest you contact them.

Do you have financing plans available?

Yes! We will work with you to develop a payment plan that meets your needs. Our counselors will explain the details with you when you come in for your free consultation.

Expectations Results and Risks of LASIK
How much work will I miss?

In most cases, patients go home following surgery and rest. They usually feel fine the next morning. We often perform the procedure on Fridays and patients return to work on the following Monday.

What are the risks of refractive surgery?

Again, our counselors will discuss the benefits, risks, and side-effects of the surgery with you, and what you may expect from the procedure. Relative to most surgical procedures, refractive surgeries are one of the safest, with an extremely low complication rate.
