All Laser LASIK - Life Without Contacts or Glasses
LASIK is a safe and excellent surgical alternative for patients who wish to eliminate their need for contacts or glasses, especially in the age range of 20 to 40.
LASIK is one of the most commonly performed ophthalmic surgical procedures in the country, and it has an excellent success rate. LASIK has a faster healing time than other laser procedures. The rapid recovery time allows patients to see well within a few hours and resume most normal activities without glasses within one day.
LASIK has become the most common elective vision correction procedure in the United States. Approximately 32 million procedures have been performed. In fact, LASIK has recently been approved by NASA and all branches of the U.S. military thanks to the blade free technology of the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser.
The LASIK procedure takes a few minutes and reshapes the cornea to correct your eyes’ unique vision imperfections of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Here’s what happens:
You get an extensive eye examination with our physicians and Dr. Katzen.
Computers/software are used to make an individual blueprint of your eyes using Wavefront technology, making your laser vision correction achieve a customized result.
The IntraLase FS Laser is used to make a thin flap in your cornea.
You'll be given numbing drops so you won't feel pain. This flap enables Dr. Katzen to make the LASIK correction.
The Visx Star S4 laser is used to make the correction to your cornea, based on your unique vision/eye characteristics.
The vision correction is entirely controlled by the computer. The procedure is fast,
safe, and virtually painless. You can be free of contacts or glasses!
Outcomes may vary. however NINETY-EIGHT PERCENT of nearsighted patients receiving the AdvancedCustomVue system with the VISX Star4 Laser and IntraLase Femtosecond Laser achieved 20/25 or better one year after treatment at Katzen Eye Care & Laser Center.

The Implantable Contact Lens, an Alternative to LASIK
The Visian ICL will offer another option for those seeking reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In addition, the ICL will provide many, who are not candidates for LASK or those patients who do not wish to have LASIK, a way to achieve this goal.
The best candidate for the Visian ICL are between the ages of 21 and 45, with moderate to severe nearsightedness. It is best if the candidate has not had any previous ophthalmic surgery and does not have a history of ophthalmic disease such as glaucoma, iritis or diabetic retinopathy.
The STAAR ICL, marketed under the brand name VisianICL, is a refractive lens also known as a phakic IOL. "Phakic" meaning that the natural lens of the eye is not removed during the procedure. Instead, the natural lens is left in place. IOL means intraocular lens, or a lens inside the eye. The ICL is a posterior chamber implant that is situated behind the iris and in front of the natural crystalline lens. The ICL is considered an alternative to corneal refractive surgery such as LASIK.
The ICL surgery is performed in an outpatient basis, which means that the patient has surgery and leaves the same day.
ICLs are intended to remain in place without maintenance. If it becomes necessary, for any reason, they can be easily removed.
